Carpinteria held off Segerstrom, 11-7, in a CIF-SS Division 4 girls tennis wild-card match on Tuesday at the Carpinteria courts.
The Warriors advance to play at Bellflower on Wednesday in a first-round match.
“I am happy we got this match in and out of the way,” said coach Charles Bryant. “We did have some nervousness in the first half of the first round but we did a great job of turning it around and winning some crucial tight sets that could have gone either way. We had a great second round and widened our lead to 8-4.”
In singles, Silke Leonard swept her three sets.
“Against their two-time league champion, Ashley Lam, Silke played her best match of her high school career. She was just incredible against the hard-hitting Jaguar as she played great defense but attacked when she had the chance,” said Bryant.
Zahra Porinsh went 2-1 “and had a great comeback against their not true No. 1 player. Zahra came back from 2-5 to pull out a 7-5 crucial win in the first round,” said Bryant. “Those two singles victories were definitely a difference maker and really helped propel our team into the next round. Neida Garcia went 1-2 but really gave it her all. I was very happy with her effort today.”
In doubles, Natalie Martinez/Ariana Lounsbury went 3-0 and Natalia Perez/Valerie Ojeda went 2-1.
Carpinteria is now 13-6 overall.
